Big Pine man arrested on federal charges
uesday the Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) presented the case regarding the theft of the firearms and SWAT gear that had been stolen from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office marked patrol vehicle to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
A Grand Jury convened and an indictment was issued against 32 year old Steven W. McClelland of Big Pine Key. The same day a federal arrest warrant was issued for McClelland.
McClelland was charged with the following federal violations:
- Possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon
- Possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition
- Possession of a machine gun
Last Thursday, 8:45 A.M. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division detectives, general crimes detectives, and federal agents executed the arrest warrant. McClelland was found at his residence in Big Pine Key. McClelland was interviewed and admitted that he had knowledge the machine gun, ammunition, and SWAT gear had been stolen. McClelland additionally confessed to having handled the machine gun and ammunition, which is also a federal violation. ATF turned over McClelland to agents with the U.S.Marshal Service. He is now in federal custody being held with no bond.
