Rescue center director arrested on theft charge

Maya Totman, 54, director of the Wildlife Rescue of the Florida Keys on Big Pine Key, was arrested last Friday for allegedly shoplifting about $130 worth of hats and t-shirts from the Navy Exchange at NAS Key West.

According to a Key West Police incident report, store cameras showed Totman placing shirts and hats in a green grocery bag she was carrying in her cart. The report alleges that Totman then placed her purse on top of the bag and walked out of the store.

All of the items were recovered and returned to the store. Reports indicate this is Totman’s first brush with the la.w She told officers that the case was a misunderstanding.

Totman, who is married to a retired service member, is known to personnel there as she has access to Navy facilities and also spends a good deal of time there handling various bird rescues from her Big Pine center.

Totman was released last Friday with no bond on a stipulation that she appear in court. A trial date has not yet been set.
