Two arrested on drug charges

A Rockland Key couple was arrested and charged with possessing illegal drugs.

A Sheriff’s detective spotted 30 year old Demond Johnson and 21 year old Rebecca Wells at the 9.5 mile marker of highway U.S. One. He knew there was an active warrant for Johnson for violation of probation, so he stopped.

He identified himself as a law enforcement officer. As he spoke, he saw Johnson turn around and hand something to Wells. As Johnson was being handcuffed, Wells then dropped something on the ground and put her foot on it.

The detective told her to move her foot. Underneath was a plastic bag with eight grams of cocaine inside. A search of Johnson turned up a plastic bag with marijuana inside and in Wells’ purse a search turned up Xanax.

Both were arrested. Johnson was charged with the warrant and with possession of cocaine and marijuana. Wells was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of cocaine and tampering with evidence. They were both booked into jail.
